On 13 October, as part of our Jobtober initiative – a college-wide programme supporting students with their next steps – the MFL department held its annual Translation Day.

We were delighted to welcome back former student and now professional translator, Sarah Letza, who shared her journey into the translation industry. Sarah spoke to students about the pathways into translation, what day-to-day life looks like in the profession, and the challenges future translators may face – including the rise of AI translation tools and the enduring importance of human translators.

Year 13 students also took part in a hands-on poetry translation workshop, working from French or Spanish into English. They explored not only the meaning of the texts but also how to preserve form, metre, lexical choices, cultural nuances, and the overall tone of the original poems.
